About
Hi! My name's Kristi Wong, and I'm a queer, non-binary, neurodivergent person of Chinese-Malay descent, currently living as a settler in "New Westminster", on the traditional, unceded, and unsurrendered territories of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking peoples on Coast Salish lands. I founded gutpunch daydream studio in 2024 to house my productions as a writer and artist after leaving the tech industry (to hopefully never return - keep me in your prayers lol).Much of my work explores tensions that live within the human experience. Big, scary emotions tangling with soft wonder; messy, variegated greys that contain every colour and muddy the binary. Following the joy. Following the heartbreak. Following where attention and intention leads.Explorations through the studio are translated through metal, textile, fibre, and paper with a focus on slow and intentional handmade craftsmanship. Each chainmaille link is opened and closed by hand; materials are deadstock, thrifted, salvaged, and repurposed as much as possible. I don't strive for perfection, because that's an unattainable standard, but I do take pride in the quality, wearability, and aesthetic of my finished pieces.Inspiration is a cherished haunting, and I’ve always been interested in how objects communicate; sources range from mid 1800s Romanticism and Juliet cap veils, to 1930s qipaos and modern Hanfu, and far beyond. Also, millennial-coded yearning. At the core of my design sensibilities is genderfluidity and cheeky personal expression, so nothing here comes with a labelled directive - if you like it, wear it!Selected stock is currently available at Slice Gallery in Vancouver, and you can find us at in-person events listed here. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, or want to chat :) Thanks for your interest!
